Some of My People
The carvings below are samples of my attempts to render a likeness of people. Carved on a variety of woods using several techniques, they represent the range of the skills I've tried to learn. Mostly, I like to carve the faces as if they are alive with their personalities.
Gertis and Alida
Gertis and Alida were neighbors who lived a simple life--no electricity, no running water.
Minnie Pearl
Sarah OPHELIA Cannon, aka Minnie Pearl, was raised in my hometown. There are many funny and heartwarming stories of this famed member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Ostein
Ostein Edwards was my father's best friend; they grew up together. They spent many days bird hunting and searching for wildflowers. He was married to my mother's sister making him my uncle.

Charlie Garner
Charlie Garner retired as a performer on the Grand Ole Opry to return to the home farm and live the good life. He started the Grinders Switch Hour, a weekly show on stage at the local Chamber of Commerce where he featured a local band and performances by up and coming musicians in the Middle Tennessee area.
Ed Bruce, Songwriter
Ed Bruce was a successful songwriter who performed a few times at the Grinders Switch Hour show at our Chamber of Commerce. He was known for writing the 1975 song "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys."
Polly Jordan
Polly was an aunt to my first wife. She was a wonderful sweet woman who was a treasure to me.
Arrow Head Man
A Native American profile sits on a piece of wood shaped like an arrowhead.
Hoop On Forehead
Hoop on Forehead was a Crow Indian from Montana whose widely used photograph was made by Edward Curtis.
Quanah Parker
Quanah Parker was a Comanche leader who, as the last chief of the Kwahadi (Quahadi) band, mounted an unsuccessful war against white expansion in northwestern Texas (1874–75). The last great chief of the Comanches lived out the remainder of his life as a cattle farmer.
Union Soldier
This image was inspired by a photograph of a National Park Ranger who posed as a Union Soldier for a magazine.
Farmer Thinking
This is a pose I've seen many times by farmers thinking through a problem.
Spirit of Mee
Mee McCormick, a health-conscious chef inspired this photograph.
Braided Hair
I was inspired to create this carving by an illustration in a children's book. It was my first attempt to carve braided hair.
